Rapid Eye Movement

I was recently part of an exhibition put together by a group of fellow third year students of Sheffield Hallam University Graphic Design. The exhibition was held at the Riverside Live in Sheffield and paid homage to one of life's wonders, the dream. Whether it be a nightmare or about kittens or falling out of a tree or even a wet dream, we all experience dreams during our lives. If fact we spend on average 6 years of our lives dreaming. Each designer in the exhibition had the task of illustrating a personal dream by using their choice of materials. The exhibit was set out in a colour sequence that connoted day to night and each designer was assigned a colour to follow. For example the day time colours (orange, yellow, green..) would demonstrate day dreams.

The exhibition room was, as all art spaces are, vast a white with large vintage bay windows that looked out over Kelham Island. The balcony doors were open letting in the cold breeze from a foggy Sheffield and brought with it the sounds of the river flowing fast down below. The exhibition preparation began at 4pm followed by the official opening which took place at 7pm. By 7 all pieces were up, the buffet (consisting of dreamy treats such as rainbow drops and space invaders) had been laid out and the Poundland twinkly lights took centre stage. Dreamlike music played in the distance as guests and fellow students began to arrive. The room was abuzz of life by 8pm and the air was thick with conversation.

The exhibition was a success and feedback, on behalf of all designers, was both positive and encouraging. The dream wall was well submitted to and am pleased to announce the buffet got eaten. The exhibition is running from the 3rd - 5th April at the Riverside Live, 4pm - late. On behalf of all the designers that took part, we thankyou for all the support we received and invite you! to take a look around and share your dream experiences with us. All dream wall submissions will be posted onto the official page (link below).
